En 1956, Roger Vadim écrit avec Raoul Lévy un scénario intitulé Et Dieu… créa la femme. Aucun producteur ne veut financer le film. Brigitte Bardot se rend alors au festival de Cannes. Tout le monde parle d'elle et la starlette qu'elle est devenue éclipse Sophia Loren et Gina Lollobrigida, les plus grandes stars de l'époque. Les flashs des photographes se déclenchent sur son passage et son sex-appeal émeut la Croisette.

C’est finalement grâce à l'approbation de Curd Jürgens, acteur important de cette époque, pour qui Vadim et Lévy ont taillé sur mesure le rôle d'Éric Carradine, qu'ils obtiennent le financement nécessaire. Le tournage a lieu à Saint-Tropez. C'est ce film qui lui permet d'entrer dans la légende du cinéma mondial et de devenir un mythe vivant, un modèle social et un sex-symbol international.

La jeune artiste y joue le rôle de Juliette Hardy, face à Curd Jürgens, Christian Marquand et Jean-Louis Trintignant, avec lequel se noue une liaison. Un an plus tard, le 6 décembre 1957, elle divorce de Vadim. Celui-ci définit ainsi le personnage qu'elle interprète :

« Je voulais, à travers Brigitte, restituer le climat d'une époque, Juliette est une fille de son temps, qui s'est affranchie de tout sentiment de culpabilité, de tout tabou imposé par la société et dont la sexualité est entièrement libre. Dans la littérature et les films d'avant-guerre, on l'aurait assimilée à une prostituée. C'est dans ce film une très jeune femme, généreuse, parfois désaxée et finalement insaisissable, qui n'a d'autre excuse que sa générosité. »
