The 2000s: successive failures
Harrison Ford is chosen by Robert Zemeckis to star in his next film. The concept very different from other films in which he was able to participate attracts him, as well as the care taken in the construction of the scenario and the originality of his character. Appearances came out on screens in 2000 and the star unveiled a new facet of his acting by playing one of his rare roles as "villains", far from the hero of the usual action films for him. He plays the role of Norman Spencer and his wife is played by Michelle Pfeiffer; this one is taken from visions which compromise the peace of the couple. This fantastic thriller, which is a tribute to the cinema of Alfred Hitchcock, meets a great success and allows Harrison Ford to find the heights of the box office.
During this same period, he refused several roles in successful films such as Traffic, En plein tempête or The Patriot. For the latter, his choice is motivated by the violence shown and in particular infanticide.

The position of commander that he takes from Captain Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson), who finds himself second, make him an unpleasant character. The attitude of his character contrasts with that of his sidekick who is closer to his men. Then he finds himself confronted with the gaze of his crew following a reactor leak. But this antipathy turns into heroism because of the turn of events. The film, despite the great care taken in production, is Harrison Ford's biggest failure since he was at the top of the bill.

Apparences sort sur les écrans en 2000 et la vedette dévoile une nouvelle facette de son jeu d'acteur en incarnant l'un de ses rares rôles de « méchants », loin du héros des films d'actions habituels pour lui. Il tient le rôle de Norman Spencer et sa femme est interprétée par Michelle Pfeiffer ; celle-ci est prise de visions qui compromettent la tranquillité du couple. Ce thriller fantastique, qui est un hommage au cinéma d'Alfred Hitchcock, rencontre un très grand succès et permet à Harrison Ford de retrouver les sommets du box-office.

Pour ce film, en plus d'être l'interprète principal, il s'essaie en tant que producteur délégué et prend sa fonction très à cœur en s'impliquant dans le développement de l'histoire et tous les autres aspects de la production. Le film, qui relate un fait historique durant la guerre froide, lui offre l'un de ses meilleurs rôles. Il interprète Nikolaï Zateïev, le commandant du sous-marin nucléaire russe K-19, dont la prise de fonction semble contestable. La place de commandant qu'il prend au capitaine Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson), qui lui se retrouve second, font de lui un personnage antipathique. L'attitude de son personnage contraste avec celle de son acolyte qui est plus proche de ses hommes. Puis il se retrouve confronté au regard de son équipage à la suite d'une fuite de réacteur. Mais cette antipathie se transforme en héroïsme du fait de la tournure des évènements. Le film, malgré le grand soin apporté à la production, est le plus gros échec de Harrison Ford depuis qu'il est en haut de l'affiche.
