The film gives rise to two sequels in which he repeats the role. In The Empire Strikes Back, his acting takes on a new dimension with the dramatic evolution of Han Solo's role, linked both to his romantic relationship with Leia and his uncomfortable position in the face of his friend's betrayal, Lando Calrissian. Just before he is frozen in carbonite, the princess declares her love for him and he has to reply "I love you too". Seeing the unconvincing result, Irvin Kershner, the director, asks him to improvise. He therefore changes the line to "I know ...", which will remain inseparable from his character. The fact that Solo is immersed in carbonite is also an alternative for the writers if Harrison Ford refuses to play in the third installment of the saga. Indeed, George Lucas is not sure that his star agrees to resume the role again after his success in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Consécrartion avec Star Wars Le film donne lieu à deux suites dans lesquelles il reprend le rôle. Dans L'Empire contre-attaque, son jeu de comédien prend une nouvelle dimension avec l'évolution dramatique du rôle de Han Solo, liée à la fois à sa relation amoureuse avec Leia et à sa position inconfortable face à la trahison de son ami, Lando Calrissian. Juste avant qu'il soit congelé dans la carbonite, la princesse lui déclare son amour et il doit répliquer « Je t'aime aussi ». Voyant le résultat peu convaincant, Irvin Kershner, le réalisateur, lui demande d'improviser. Il change donc la réplique en « Je sais… », qui restera indissociable de son personnage. Le fait que Solo soit plongé dans la carbonite constitue en outre une alternative pour les scénaristes si Harrison Ford refuse de jouer dans le troisième volet de la saga. En effet, George Lucas n'est pas assuré que sa vedette accepte de reprendre à nouveau le rôle après son succès dans Les Aventuriers de l'arche perdue.
