The 1990s: action heroes
In 1989, he was offered the role of Jack Ryan to play in In Pursuit of Red October, an adaptation of Tom Clancy's novel. But preferring the role of Commander Marko Ramius, already reserved for Sean Connery, he declines the offer. Eventually, the role is obtained by Alec Baldwin. It was in 1992, after withdrawing from a Paramount Pictures project, that he took over the role of the CIA agent, left vacant by Alec Baldwin who preferred to play on stage on Broadway. Harrison Ford then plays the hero of Tom Clancy in the diptych War Games (1992) and Immediate Danger (1994) directed by Phillip Noyce. Harrison Ford impose un personnage vulnérable, l'opposé d'un héros d'action sans crainte et sans reproche, ce qui correspond à l'analyste de la CIA et au père de famille qu'est le personnage. Le scénario de Danger immédiat est lancé en même temps que celui de Jeux de guerre. Les deux films sont des succès et c'est au milieu du tournage de celui-ci que le deuxième film est confirmé.

En 1993, entre les deux aventures de Jack Ryan, Harrison Ford redonne un coup de fouet à sa carrière en tournant dans Le Fugitif de Andrew Davis, adaptation de la série télévisée homonyme.
