On May 16, 1988, filming of the third opus in the series, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, began. This film reveals in particular the relationship that Indy has with his father, with the quest for the Grail as a backdrop. As Harrison Ford dons his adventurer costume again, his father's “bookworm” is played by Sean Connery. This father / son confrontation allows the actor to exploit and express other facets of his character's personality. In this film, we can see teenage Indy; it's Harrison Ford who suggests an interpreter. He offers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas a young actor who had played his son in Mosquito Coast, River Phoenix. To justify this choice, he declares: "The one who most resembles me at this age is River". On the set, the atmosphere is cheerful, as for the sequence where Indy and his father talk on board the Zeppelin. Harrison Ford and Sean Connery play her pantless, due to the heat. Ce film dévoile notamment la relation qu'entretient Indy avec son père, avec comme toile de fond la quête du Graal. Alors que Harrison Ford revêt de nouveau son costume d'aventurier, son « rat de bibliothèque » de père est joué par Sean Connery. Cette confrontation père/fils permet à l'acteur d'exploiter et d'exprimer d'autres facettes de la personnalité de son personnage. Dans ce film, on peut voir Indy adolescent ; c'est Harrison Ford qui suggère un interprète. Il propose à Steven Spielberg et George Lucas un jeune acteur qui avait joué son fils dans Mosquito Coast, River Phoenix. Pour justifier ce choix, il déclare : « Celui qui me ressemble le plus à cet âge, c'est River ». Sur le plateau, l'ambiance est enjouée, comme pour la séquence où Indy et son père parlent à bord du Zeppelin. Harrison Ford et Sean Connery la jouent sans pantalon, à cause de la chaleur qui règne. Harrison Ford, qui a pris l'habitude de faire une grande partie de ses cascades, se retrouve suspendu au canon d'un tank et contre une paroi en pierre, pendant que les accessoiristes lui jettent des morceaux d'argile au fur et à mesure que l'engin avance. Il doit également recommencer maintes fois une course de cheval à cause de son chapeau qui s'envole, car il est inimaginable qu'Indiana Jones perde son chapeau. Après un tournage sans problème majeur, le film sort en mai 1989 et est, comme les précédents, un succès commercial.
