Mais cette même année, c'est avec le thriller militaire Des hommes d'honneur, de Rob Reiner, que l'acteur réussit une performance remarquée. Entouré d'un casting de luxe, composé entre autres de Jack Nicholson et Demi Moore, et aidé par un scénario signé Aaron Sorkin, il parvient à mener ce huis clos criminel avec une maestria qui lui permet de décrocher notamment une seconde nomination pour l'oscar du meilleur acteur. Tom Cruise sert d'inspiration pour la création du personnage d'Aladdin dans le long métrage d'animation homonyme des studios Disney sorti cette année là.
