This pathway is an ancient path of the sixteenth century - named Herbu way and then Fosse at the almoner (1529) and Street of the Descent from Montargis (1646) - which was actually opened in 1680 on the grounds of the Carmelite convent which it takes its name before being renamed rue du Regard due to the presence of a light trout.
From 1807 to 1856, the street was home to one of the new fountains in Paris built by Jean-François Bralle, it was destroyed during the digging of the Rue de Rennes. Only the bas-relief decorating was preserved and is now on the fountain of Leda in the Luxembourg Gardens.
